WHAT'S HAPPENING?

In High School, Term 1 was not only very educational, but an extremely successful growing experience for all of us together! We have had so much fun together, and I have loved getting to know these students. For term 2, we have some amazing opportunities to gear up for! First off, we will be working with the Jazz Band for a Christmas concert right before our break, then we will get to work with the York College Concert Choir on a composition that we will have the wonderful opportunity to perform together — what a way to ring in the new year at Denver Christian School! After the new year, we will be working toward our winter concert, then ending the term with our Singing Valentine’s.

The Middle Schoolers performed well in their Fall Concert! We have two more performances approaching! On November 13, students will perform at Lakeview Living Center. We can't wait to bless the residents with the healing power of God and music! We will also perform in our annual Grandparent's Day celebration on November 26. During Term 2, students will study sight-singing skills, vocal pedagogy, and begin learning new music.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

Middle School Choir

Students in grades 6-8 have the opportunity to join the choir. Choir meets 1-2 times a week and studies a wide variety of music. Varying upon the given school year, choir has been broken down into 6th grade and 7th/8th grade. Students begin with choir basics of technique and performance skill, and grow into musicians who read, interpret, and perform an array of music. The choir performs 3-4 concerts a year at school, 1-2 concerts for the community including the Rockies game at Coors Field, and attends the Elitch Garden's Choir Festival May.

DC Singers

DC Singers is a choir that is focused on the full experience of music education. This includes, but is not limited to, sight-singing, discussion of the science behind singing, learning how to actively listen to music, music history and research, and the art of performance.  Members of DC Singers learn a wide variety of music from all genres and difficulty in order to better prepare for All-State Choir auditions, collegiate choral ensembles, and even a career in music if they are so inclined!  This choir provides multiple performance opportunities including school concerts, sporting events, Colorado Christian University's Choral Festival, an invitation to sing the National Athem at a Rockies game, DCS's Grandparent's Day Celebration, a Christmas "Cocoa and Carols" concert, and one traveling opportunity per year. This year, the choir will embark on a 5 day Midwestern Music Experience Tour! Students who attend will go site-seeing, visit three excellent colleges, clinics with nationally acclaimed conductors, and attend a concert in celebration of J.S. Bach conducted by conductor and composer Tom Trenney, all while performing in historic venues along the way.

TISA LAWRENCE-KREKEL BIO - HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC

Education/Degrees Held: Masters Degree from Glenn Korff School of Music

In 2012, God made the call to music very evident is Tisa’s life. At York College in Nebraska,  she changed her major from Psychology to Music Education and began the long journey that would change her life forever. Music has always been part of her life, reaching all the way back to how her grandparents met one another, but the call to teach music challenged her to change herself for the better into the person God created her to be. Upon completing the first part of her degree in Vocal Performance, she realized her passion resided with Choral music and opted to begin her masters a year earlier than originally planned at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. In 2018, she graduated with a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting, got married, and relocated to Denver, Colorado. The only thing that was missing was the choir her soul deeply desired to direct.

Mrs. Krekel was drawn to Denver Christian School because of the passion God instilled in her to help her students grow in their faith and their ability through music. To her, music education is more than a creative outlet, but a way for students to learn and apply critical life skills in a creative setting. Music can draw people from all walks of life together, creating friendships and facilitating relationships that may not be accessible otherwise. Music can be a journey students travel together to ultimately find belonging, much like a faith walk. When Denver Christian opened its job search to find a director of High School Choral Activities and International Student Activities, Mrs. Krekel was lead to apply and overcome with joy to be part of the DCS team.

Mrs Krekel has taught in private studios throughout York and Lincoln, Nebraska, and worked with multiple Denver county schools through her work with Neighborhood Music Stapleton. She is married to Ben Krekel and enjoys attending concerts, discovering local restaurants, playing board games, and spending time with her 5 nieces and nephews whenever she can.
